- Understand the past tense in Mandarin
- Ask and answer questions using past tense
The grammar in Mandarin is different from that in English. One comon way of the past tense is to add a character 了( le ) after the verb . In details, the verbs and sentences of past tense are:
吃了 chī le (ate)
我吃了三明治。 Wǒ chī le sān míng zhì (I ate a sandwich.)
喝了 hē le (drank)
早上我喝了果汁。 Zǎo shàng wǒ hē le guǒ zhī (I drank fruit juice in the morning.)
看了 kàn le (read/watched)
中午我看了书。 Zhōng wǔ wǒ kàn le shu (I read books at noon.)
晚上我看了电影。 Wǎn shang wǒ kàn le diàn yǐng ( I watched a movie in the evening.)
去了 qù le (went)
他去了中国。 Tā qù le Zhōng guó ( He went to China.)
做了 zuò le (did)
你做功课了吗？ Nǐ zuò gōng kè le ma? (Did you do your homework?)
我做功课了。 Wǒ zuò gōng kè le (I did my homework.)
I have made a set of cards on Quizlet (quizlet.com or download the app for phone or ipad) to help your child practice learning the past tense.
Search for laoshilinda (all one word lower case) and then choose past tense.

You do not need to know any Mandarin yourself to use any of these resources.
